  30.                                   Sam Leach's Box

  32.        "It's the greatest  thing  since  sex,"  proclaims Patrick McDonald, 
  33.        vice president of MJM Hydrotech of  Los  Angeles.  "There will be no 
  34.        reason to strip-mine for coal, no reason to run supertankers full of 
  35.        oil or build nuclear-power plants." 
  36.  
  37.        The object of McDonald's enthusiasm is a mysterious  stainless-steel 
  38.        case, about the  size  of  a  steamer trunk, equipped on the outside 
  39.        with six dials and a gas jet. 
  40.  
  41.        It was developed by an equally mysterious  61-year-old  Los  Angeles 
  42.        inventor named Sam  Leach, who claims it will do nothing  less  than 
  43.        produce combustible hydrogen  from tap water - without any continous 
  44.        source of outside energy. 
  45.  
  46.        If Leach is telling the truth, his  hydrogen generator would satisfy 
  47.        a dream that scientists have had for decades; an unlimited supply of 
  48.        clean energy for homes, autos and industry at practically no cost. 
  49.  
  50.        If he's not telling the truth, it could be the biggest business scam 
  51.        since hundreds were  bilked by the promoter of the nonexistent  Dale 
  52.        automobile. 
  53.  
  54.        Leach says his device is really quite simple.  Inside the case is an 
  55.        UNIDENTIFIED REACTANT METAL.   Tap water is fed into the case and an 
  56.        electric charge is applied, turning the water to steam. 
  57.  
  58.        The reactant metal SOAKS UP THE OXYGEN in the steam and the hydrogen 
  59.        THUS RELEASED is sucked out of the chamber by a vacuum device. 
  60.  
  61.        Leach says the device needs a small charge of outside power to begin 
  62.        the conversion process,  but  that  after  that  it powers itself by 
  63.        using the heat produced by the chemical reaction. 
  64.  
  65.        Unlikely as all this sounds, Leach  has  some  believers.  Morris J. 
  66.        Mirkin, the founder  and  former head of Budget Rent-A-Car  and  now 
  67.        chairman of MJM,  and  Randall Presley, president of Presley Cos., a 
  68.        California group of home construction  firms,  have  each paid Leach 
  69.        $500,000 for "automotive"  and  "residential  application   rights," 
  70.        respectively, to the generator.

  72.        When rumors of  the  device  began  to  circulate,  the stock in the 
  73.        Presley Cos. shot from $4.24 a share last December 23rd to $20.25 on 
  74.        March 25th. 
  75.  
  76.        At that point,  the  Securities  and   Exchange  Commission  stopped 
  77.        trading in Presley  stock  and  launched an investigation  into  the 
  78.        possibility of stock manipulation and other violations of securities 
  79.        laws. 
  80.  
  81.        Leach commissioned two reputable laboratories to test the generator. 
  82.        In press releases  prepared  by  MJM, both were quoted as saying the 
  83.        machine worked.  But the testing laboratories  themselves  refuse to 
  84.        talk to reporters, saying they promised Leach they would not. 
  85.  
  86.        Skeptics : Leach  also  is not available to reporters,  and  he  has 
  87.        little support among  scientists.   Most experts say his description 
  88.        of the process violates two laws of thermodynamics. 
  89.  
  90.        "It's ridiculous," snapped a hydrogen  expert from UCLA.  "It sounds 
  91.        like a perpetual-motion machine." 
  92.  
  93.        And so far, the U.S. Energy Research and Development  Administration 
  94.        also is unimpressed.   "It's possible to produce hydrogen that way," 
  95.        one top ERDA scientist said, "but  we  don't  know what's in his box 
  96.        and he won't tell anybody.  If I had to make a guess,  I'd say it is 
  97.        a gimmick." 
  98.  
  99.        Whether is is  indeed a gimmick or for real will presumably be known 
  100.        when the SEC completes its investigation  -  or  when  one of the 86 
  101.        patents Leach HAS BEEN ISSUED in countries around the  world is made 
  102.        public.  That may happen early next month. 
  103.  
  104.        In the meantime, the Southern California Gas Co. of Los Angeles, one 
  105.        of the firms  approached to use the Leach device to generate gas, is 
  106.        keeping an open mind. 
  107.  
  108.        "It seems a little unusual, but [physical]  laws have been broken in 
  109.        the past," says Southern vice president Ray Todd. 
  110.  
  111.        But then, Todd   is   willing   to   consider  some   unconventional 
  112.        propositions.  Not long  ago,  he was approached by an inventor with 
  113.        an idea for extracting methane gas - the chief ingredient in natural 
  114.        gas - from chicken droppings.

  120.                                  Perpetual Motion? 
  121.  
  122.        Last March 28 in Los Angeles representatives of several laboratories 
  123.        and some reporters  watched  what  seemed to be ordinary water piped 
  124.        into a device somewhat LARGER THAN A BIG TRUNK. 
  125.  
  126.        Knobs were turned and a JET OF FLAME  burst  forth  from  a tube and 
  127.        BURNED FOR ABOUT 15 MINUTES, until the machine was turned off. 
  128.  
  129.        Samuel Leach, the  61-year  old inventor, claims the  flame  results 
  130.        from BURNING GAS  GENERATED  BY  SPLITTING  WATER  into hydrogen and 
  131.        oxygen.  Except for the brief electrical  input  necessary  to start 
  132.        the process, says  Leach, it is self-sustaining and  derives  (heat) 
  133.        from the water itself. 
  134.  
  135.        An inexpensive process  to  separate hydrogen and oxygen would solve 
  136.        the world's energy problems. 
  137.  
  138.        For at least 60 years it has been  known that the REACTIONS OF METAL 
  139.        AND WATER WILL PRODUCE HYDROGEN. 
  140.  
  141.        One early process  mixed  POWDERED  IRON  WITH STEAM.   The  Chicago 
  142.        Institute of Gas Technology has developed a HYDROGEN GENERATOR BASED 
  143.        ON CADMIUM. 
  144.  
  145.        But Derek P.  Gregory  of  the Institute, who has led the push for a 
  146.        "hydrogen economy," states that NO  KNOWN  SYSTEM  will approach the 
  147.        claims made by Leach. 
  148.  
  149.        "If it works  the  way  they  say  it does, it is perpetual  motion. 
  150.        That's impossible," SCIENCE NEWS quotes Gregory as saying. 
  151.  
  152.        The apparatus inside  Leach's  CLOSED  STEEL  TRUNK  is  supposed to 
  153.        include TWO STEEL TANKS, each holding  GRANULES  of  an UNIDENTIFIED 
  154.        METAL that theoretically REACTS WITH STEAM, BINDING  THE  OXYGEN and 
  155.        RELEASING HYDROGEN. 
  156.  
  157.        After the oxygen has been bound to the metal, Leach claims the metal 
  158.        can BE HEATED TO REMOVE THE OXYGEN AND THE CYCLE REPEATED (using the 
  159.        same metal). 
  160.  
  161.        If it is  to  be self-sustaining, the heat given off by the hydrogen 
  162.        must be MORE THAN SUFFICIENT to remove the oxygen from the metal. 
  163.  
  164.        The laws of thermodynamics say this is impossible. 
  165.  
  166.        It's easy enough to produce hydrogen  but  some heat always would be 
  167.        lost in the process and outside energy would have to be added.

  173.                                   Tunnel Vision? 
  174.  
  175.        Science regards the  laws of thermodynamics as almost sacred.  A Mr. 
  176.        Leach insists that "thermodynamicists follow certain things BLINDLY, 
  177.        like TUNNEL VISION." 
  178.  
  179.        Meanwhile investments made in a Leach  invention  by  several  large 
  180.        companies are at stake.  The stock of Presley, one  of the companies 
  181.        associated with the invention, has jumped from about $2.00 to $20.00 
  182.        and 3/8 on  the  American  Stock  Exchange,  and  the Securities and 
  183.        Exchange Commission has ordered an investigation. 
  184.  
  185.        One thing seems  sure.   Although   two   laboratories,  Smith-Emery 
  186.        Company of Los   Angeles   and   the   Approved   Engineering   Test 
  187.        Laboratories of Encino, California, disassembled and reassembled the 
  188.        apparatus and say  they  COULD  FIND  NO  HIDDEN  SOURCE  OF ENERGY, 
  189.        definitive operating tests by dispassionate scientists have not been 
  190.        made. 
  191.  
  192.        Repealing the laws  of  thermodynamics   seems   considerably   more 
  193.        difficult than amending the Constitution of the United  States.  But 
  194.        wouldn't it be wonderful if Sam Leach has done it.  -  Curtis Fuller

  199.              A picture  of  the  device  shows  the front panel to have two 
  200.              large meter type indicators,  3  small  pressure indicators, 1 
  201.              large pressure indicator, 3 protruding stops  which  could  be 
  202.              needle valve adjusters, and 5 knobs. 
  203.  
  204.              A cutaway  shows  at  least  eleven drip bottles with a common 
  205.              input for  each row of bottles.   These  rows  are  apparently 
  206.              controlled by a single master needle valve adjustment per row. 
  207.  
  208.              There must be three rows of these drip bottles,  each  row  of 
  209.              which can  be fed singly or in any combination and at any rate 
  210.              of water.  Apparently, this  water  then  drips  into the tank 
  211.              where it is electrified to generate steam. 
  212.  
  213.              The steam is then broken down by the metal in  its  process of 
  214.              absorbing the oxygen. 
  215.  
  216.              The device   sounds   simple  enough  and  has  many  possible 
  217.              arrangements to enhance the  effect.   At this time, we do not 
  218.              have copies of the patents which were said to have been issued 
  219.              in OTHER COUNTRIES. 
  220.  
  221.              Those in a position to experiment with various metals might do 
  222.              well to check into this phenomena. 
  223.  
  224.              A very  simple  test would be to use a metal  sample  under  a 
  225.              glass jar.   As steam was passed over the metal, the hydrogen, 
  226.              being a very light gas would  accumulate  in  the  top  of  an 
  227.              upside down jar. 
  228.  
  229.              A flame  could then be introduced using a spark triggered from 
  230.              a safe distance to check for  ignition.   If the reactant is a 
  231.              metal and NOT AN ALLOY, it should be fairly easy  to locate it 
  232.              by trial and error using different metals. 
  233.  
  234.              Again, if this inspires you to carry out an experiment in this 
  235.              area, we  would  really  appreciate you sharing it with us and
